CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
. . . . .
Cybermonk Extraordinaire
The signs were everywhere! Bumper stickers, round decals stuck behind stop signs, discreet emblems on the corners of fliers; images of a scraggly leafed plant with a shining gold blossom and, occasionally, in the most tucked away places, the words in bold red: The Dandelion Insurrection is here!
Tucker Jones cavorted like a thin imp set down in the midst of the cornfields. Mischief gleamed in his brown eyes. He had walked out from his print shop downtown and overheard the whole argument. Counting his lucky stars - and theirs - Tucker Jones kicked his heels to have found them before anyone else. Even with the beard and shaggy hair, Tucker had no problems recognizing the Man From the North.
"Of all the places for you to break down!" he cried to the now infamous Charlie Rider. "This sleepy little Kansas town isn't exactly a hotbed of insurrection, but there's a few of us. The TV said a terrorist named Charlie Rider was on the loose, so I whipped out some decals and snuck around at midnight putting out the welcome mat."
Tucker Jones rubbed both hands across his nest of hair. He ran the only print shop around and had been reprinting and circulating Charlie's articles for months, aided by his underground railroad of paperboys, as he called them.
"You!" Zadie exclaimed. "It was you!"
Somewhere in the country, Zadie knew an anonymous link in her network had been massively bumping up the distribution of Charlie's articles. She had tried to trace it and make contact, but it was risky. Her search alone could alert the authorities.
"Well, yes, it was me," Tucker Jones admitted humbly.
He scooted around opening the car doors for them like they were visiting royalty. Charlie took an appreciative look at the bumper sticker that had brought them together. Tucker laughed.
"I print a lot of My Kid Made Honor Roll bumper stickers. It was only a short hop of imagination to come up with The Dandelion Insurrection Is Here."
"Aren't you worried about the police?" Zadie asked him.
Tucker shrugged. "We've only got six cops in this town, and so long as nothing's exploding, they mostly ignore it. I was worried about the local folks, but after the success of the cazerolazo, I swear the whole sentiment about the Man From the North changed. No one liked living under the thumb of the soldiers, even if they weren't in the path of an oil pipeline. I can't say that people are for the Dandelion Insurrection . . . but they aren't against it, either. Mostly, they just don't want to get in trouble."
"Well, trouble's on their doorstep. They don't have a choice about that," Charlie pointed out.
"I know, I know," Tucker sighed. "The local sheriff popped into the print shop this morning. I nearly died; the proofs for the stickers were in plain sight, but he just wanted to warn me not to get in any trouble he couldn't ignore." Tucker laughed. "Now that you're here, though, I guess I shouldn't test his eyesight - or his patience - any further.
